Reading and Writing
Research-based therapy to improve reading and writing across the grade levels. Trained to implement SMARTER Intervention, a systematic and explicit structured literacy program, based on principles of Orton Gillingham. The 6 core components of literacy are targeted: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. Multisensory techniques are used.
We’ll begin with an individualized assessment to create specific goals which are monitored each session by data tracking. Let us help your child reach new heights!
Creation of Visual Aids
Visual aids are invaluable tools to assist with behavior, function, communication, and learning. I have experience creating a host of visual aids including visual schedules, behavior contracts, memory aids, picture exchange communication cards, and social stories.
Caregivers and fellow professionals are welcome. Let me know your needs and we will collaborate, face to face or virtually, to find a solution for your situation. May be laminated for durability. A digital copy is also provided. Visual aids can benefit all ages and abilities!
Speech Sound Production
The goal is to generate the greatest amount of progress in the shortest amount of time. There are a variety of evidence-backed techniques used to produce great results.
An initial evaluation is used to target the areas of need and appropriate techniques. While individual techniques vary, the main goal of all sessions is to elicit and rehearse as many accurate productions of errored speech sounds as possible using activities that are engaging to the client.
Receptive-Expressive Language Difficulties
Language difficulties can manifest in many different areas of life. Reading comprehension, writing skills, social communication, and following directions all require receptive and expressive language skills. Autistic clients and clients with movement disorders may need specialized assistance to connect. We are trained in PECS and other modes of Alternative Augmentative Communication.
An evaluation and interview highlight the needs we can address through therapy. A thorough evaluation includes discussing the ways language difficulties are impacting your daily life and your ability to use differing modes of communication. We will help you find a way to get your message across!
Stuttering or Fluency Disorders
Some dysfluency, such as verbal or sound repetitions, is a typical part of speech development. But, there are types of dysfluency that are indicators of a fluency disorder such as stuttering or cluttering. Fluency disorders can impact people of all ages.
If you experience or observe the following, a speech evaluation and treatment may be warranted: more than 3 iterations of a sound/word repetition, blocks, sound prolongations, secondary characteristics (tics, noisy breathing, grimace), or fear/anxiety around spoken communication.
School-Based Services
Experienced with FL and CA public school services. I am able to provide direct services to your school or am happy to review and discuss any questions you may have about school-based services. I am familiar with the IEP process and enjoy working as a team to collaborate with and support the school-based team to facilitate generalization.
This may look like: creation of visual aids to support behavior/communication at school, strategies to enhance comprehension, overview of the IEP process, etc.
Memory and Cognitive Care
Alzheimer’s, ADHD, TBI, ABI (stroke), concussion and other neurological disorders or insults may result in challenges to memory and cognition. In some cases, function can be improved. In others, we work as a team to find ways to compensate to overcome challenges. Research shows that change requires practice! You will practice until you achieve independence. You may need memory strategies, rehearsal to recall information that you hear/see, instruction to use apps and features of your smart phone, or visual aids.
Neuroplasticity explains that our brains can change. We work hand in hand to try new things to improve quality of life and overall function in your environment.
